Subject - Submission of report
Dear Sir
It is our great pleasure to
submit the report that you assigned on “Positive and Negative Aspects of Mobile
Communication Devices” as a part of the Business Communication course.
Over the past decade,
developments in electronics, computers, telecommunications and broadcasting
have been rapid and spectacular. Mobile communicating device is the technology with the greatest impact on the development of
a country. It is also an essential tool to increase the quality of life. Mobile
technology has assisted in the growth of virtual team, allowing people to work
together across the world. Mobile phones are also increasingly playing a key
role in reaching people quickly in case of an emergency. Different features of
mobile phones, such as text messaging, have even been proven to be quicker and
convenient when it comes to communication. Besides allowing for conversations,
text messages and information on the move, mobile phones provide peace of mind
for us knowing our loved ones are just a call away.
In chapter one, we have
introduced the topic of our research. First we gave background information
about the topic. Then we discussed the purpose of this report followed by a
detailed presentation of the research methodology we used, which includes information
about the sample, questionnaire, interview and
limitations of our research. The findings of the survey have been placed at the beginning of chapter
two. We finished chapter two’s analyses part by supporting our analyses through
the views we gathered from interviews. Like all technologies, mobile phones too
have some negative aspects due to its improper usage. We discussed some of that
issue in this chapter. We interviewed groups of people based on their age who
are partially or fully related to our topic. In chapter three we placed the
conclusion and then our recommendations in the final chapter, i.e., chapter
four.
The overall objective and
mission of our research was to find out the various positive and negative aspects
of mobile communication devices. This technology has become an essential tool for an overall
improvement. If we are more educated about the technology, it will only help us
benefit from it.
We hope this report,
despite its many limitations, will be a gateway to understand the various
aspects of mobile communication devices.
We are very grateful to you for giving us the
opportunity to work on this topic and for guiding us all through in the
preparation of this report. Without your support this report would not have
been possible.
Yours sincerely

People use their mobile phones and devices to access web-based information and
applications like email, news, sports and weather and to access mobile banking.
These mobile applications are making considerable savings in both time and
money and improving productivity. Mobile phones are also increasingly playing a

level, having a mobile phone means being able to get in touch with someone when
you need to. Different features of mobile phones, such as text messaging, have

Abstract
This
report introduces the positive and negative aspects of Mobile Communication
Devices. Our main objective was to portray the various positive aspects of
mobile phone and how they are impacting our lives. Alongside, we also showed
some of the negative effects of mobile phones. Then we have tried to show some
realistic solution to prevent the negative aspects.
Over
the past decade, developments in electronics, computers, telecommunications and
broadcasting have been rapid and spectacular. Mobile communicating device is
the technology with
the greatest impact on the development of a country. It is also an essential
tool to increase the quality of life. Mobile technology has assisted in the
growth of virtual team, allowing people to work together across the world.
People use their mobile phones and devices to access web-based information and
applications like email, news, sports and weather and to access mobile banking.
These mobile applications are making considerable savings in both time and
money and improving productivity. Mobile phones are also increasingly playing a
key role in reaching people quickly in case of an emergency. On a personal
level, having a mobile phone means being able to get in touch with someone when
you need to. Different features of mobile phones, such as text messaging, have
even been proven to be quicker and convenient when it comes to communication.
Besides allowing for conversations, text messages and information on the move,
mobile phones provide peace of mind for us knowing our loved ones are just a
call away.
From
our research we have found that mobile phones have improved the quality of the
lives of the people of Bangladesh and
also improved the financial situation. Mobile phones are playing a great role
in the lives of students by giving them the opportunity to communicate with
their fellow students whenever they need to. Businessmen are at ease of mind
knowing they can perform work related activities even when they are away from
their office. Parents are comfortable knowing that they can reach to their children
whenever they want through mobile phones. Even farmers and villagers are
hearing about the market situation before they send their product.
Due
to misuse of this technology, there are also some bad effects. We can
minimize these effects by educating people more about the technology. Parents
should be concerned about their children’s usage of mobile phones. People
should be aware of the dangerousness of using mobile phones while driving. Overall, people in general should be more
concerned about putting this technology in use for our advancement.
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background
This report has been written on the basis
of the research on the “Positive and Negative Aspects of
Mobile Communication Devices”. When the mobile phones first came into the
market, it was intended just to be used as a phone while you are on the go. The
last decade has seen a significant use of mobile phones. This has led to changes in the way individuals
communicate, including the fact that they can reach people by phone at anytime
of the day no matter where they might be. Moreover, mobiles phone didn’t remain
just a phone. Aside from voice telephony and text messaging, mobiles phones can be used as an Internet
browsing device through WAP and an
entertainment device through games and MP3 player. Even though mobile phones have been a proven
technology when it
comes to the improvement of a country, a nation or simply the quality of an
individual life, there appears to be different views about the roles of a
mobile phone and about its significances. Some might see it as a must have item
and some might think of it just as another burden. It is only through education
that we can understand the role of a technology and its proper usage.
In this report we have focused on how mobile
phones are being used today, highlighting its positive and negative aspects.
This research is a qualitative study of mobile users of various age ranges. Throughout
in our report we have tried to present extensively the findings of our research
and the analysis of the findings. At the end we tried to come to a conclusion
on the basis of our analyses and then made some recommendations that might be
helpful fully or partially to reduce the bad effects of mobile communication
devices.
1.2 Purpose
At
present, we have a fast growing number of mobile phone users in Bangladesh. It has created a huge impact on the economy Bangladesh, on how businessmen make their decisions, on
how students and general public communicate each other and even on how
fishermen or farmers plan the release their products depending on the market.
Undeniably, mobile phones have become the essential tool for the improvement of
this nation. However, if we limit our view to the mobile phone’s present
utility we may be overlooking some of the powerful aspects of this technology.
Our
purpose of writing this report was to find out how various ages of people are
using mobile phones, how they behave with their phones, and how it is affecting
their day-to-day lives. Then, by analyzing that
information, we have tried to recommend some realistic suggestions in reducing
the negative aspects and thus giving us the opportunity for more advancement by
utilizing this technology.
1.3 Research Methodology
1.3.1 Sample
We
have considered mobile phone users of various ages. We have made sure that the
total numbers of people taking the survey are equally sub divided
into different age range and that we interviewed both male and female users.
Due to time limitation, we have surveyed a total of 24 mobile phone users,
among which 12 are male and 12 female. Our sample consists of students, people
from different kinds of job and parents. We have categorized our sample by the
following age range:
a)
14-17
years
b)
18-22
years
c)
23-27
years
d)
28-33
years
e)
34-38
years
f)
38 +
years
1.3.2 Questionnaire
The
questionnaire comprised of three sections. The first section
was to determine the user’s age and profession so that we maintain an equal
ratio between them. The second section was to identify the positive aspect of
mobile phones and how it is impacting the users’ lives. The goal of the third
section was to figure out the negative aspects of mobile phones due to its
improper usage. The target of section one was to categorize the users while the
last two sections were solely targeted to collect the views and opinions of the users on the topic.
1.3.3 Interview
We
took the interview of
three people. Among them one person is a young student, one is a professional
and the last but not the least person is a housewife. The interviews were
carried out individually but the same question pattern was followed in
interviewing all three of them. In the next chapter we have included the
details of the three interviews and also presented background information on
the people whom we interviewed.
1.4 Scope and Limitation
The
impact of
mobile phones is a vast issue in Bangladesh or
anywhere in the World. Since the outcome, whether positive or negative, of this
technology mainly
depends on the users, it is hard to get a general view on this topic. It is
nearly impossible to cover all the positive and negative aspects in a report of
this scale. So we had to set Bangladesh as the
boundary for this report and target some people with specific age range. Due to
the shortage of time it was difficult to take the survey of a large scale of mobile
phone users and hence the findings may not reflect the impact of this mobile
technology in our country.
2.0 Descriptions
2.1 Findings of the Survey
- It is very easy to communicate with friends and family members with mobile phones wherever one might be.

2.2 Analysis of the findings
- It is very easy to communicate with friends and family members with mobile phones wherever one might be.
ü
88% of the people Agreed and 8% of the people
partially agreed that it is very easy to communicate with friends and family
members with mobile phones. The male to female ratio is also equal in those
percentages.
ü
A mere 4% were neutral.
ü
Surprisingly nobody disagreed.
- Text messaging feature in mobile phones is very useful when it comes to sending short and quick messages.
ü Maximum (42%) agreed that
text messaging feature in mobile phone is very useful when it comes to sending
short and quick messages.
ü Everybody who agreed was from
14-18 and 19-22 age range.
ü There is a considerable
amount of people who are neutral (29%). People who are new to this feature or
do not want to spend extra for it belongs to this category.
ü The older generation was the
one to partially disagree with it. It is a lot easier for them to speak on the
phone than type something in that very small keyboard.
- Our day-to-day life will not be smooth without mobile phones.
ü
After
this survey it is
clear that a lot of people depend on their mobile phones. Teenagers specially
can’t think of a day without their text messaging on their mobile phones.
ü
Interestingly
8% people either partially disagreed or disagreed because they use it only for
voice conversations. Middle-aged and the older generation were among them
- Mobile phones have made it very convenient for professionals to hold their business meetings on the go.
ü
Among the people who were surveyed, all the
professionals agreed (46%) and partially agreed (25%) to this.
ü
Those who are neutral are mainly students and
parents.
ü
Surprisingly there were none to disagree with
it.
- Mobile phones have greatly increased the quality of life and overall situation of Bangladesh.
ü
Interestingly, there is somebody for all the
categories. A majority of the people either agreed or partially agreed to this
as we can see from the data. Among them are students and businessmen from both
sexes.
ü
A few people partially disagreed (13%) and
disagreed (4%) or stayed neutral (13%) because they are yet to utilize the full
potential of this technology.
- Accessing the internet through mobile phones, it is a lot easier to check the news, weather or the score of your favorite games.
ü
Students and
businessmen were among the people who agreed (50%) and partially agreed (21%).
From the students, we mainly found males agreeing to this since there were not
many females who were interested in sports.
ü
Those who
partially disagreed (8%) or stayed neutral (21%) finds web browsing mobile
phones not user friendly and not so easy comparing to browsing from personal
computers.
- Text Messaging has made it possible for TV shows to receive the opinions of their audiences more easily.
ü
Young
generations who watch music shows as well as older generations who like to
participate in debate shows are among the 63% who agreed. We have found the
ratio of male and female to be equal on this one.
ü
Those who
stayed neutral (17%) or partially disagreed (13%) don’t find it very convenient
to use text messaging to send votes and getting that extra charge on their
phone bill.
- Mobile phones, now-a-days, are being used more as an entertainment device e.g. listening to music, surfing the web, sending MMS.
ü
From this survey, we found that
people who agreed (58%) were mainly them who use their mobile phones also as an
entertainment device. These people mainly include teenagers and college
students.
ü
Parents and businessmen who rather use the
phone only for voice communication are among the neutral (13%) and partially
disagree (17%) group.
- Young generation is spending a lot of time behind mobile phones instead of studying or involving themselves in other recreational activities.
ü
From this
survey we
found nobody to disagree with the statement. Even the young generation, both
male and female, agreed that they are spending more time behind cell phones.
- Having the different features of a mobile phone easily accessible, users are faced with unexpected expenses.
ü
Teenagers
and college students are among the ones who agreed (29%) and partially agreed
(38%). This is because when they start using the features they find it very
hard to control.
ü
People
who are matured and old enough chose to disagree because they are responsible
with their expenses.
- Camera phones and MMS service are a big threat to our privacy.
ü
58% of
the people agreed and 25% of the people partially agreed that camera phones and
MMS service are a big threat
to our privacy.
ü
Only a
mere 8% slightly disagreed because they believe it depends on how a person uses
the mobile phone.
- Mobile phone usage while driving is a big problem due to the diversion of attention from driving.
ü
From this survey, we can clearly see that people unanimously agree to the fact that using
mobile phones while driving is a big
problem.
- Excessive usage of mobile phones is a cause of brain cancer.
ü
This is a
very controversial issue as we can see from the survey.
ü
46%
agreed, 8% partially agreed, 25% stayed neutral, 17% partially disagreed and 4%
completely disagreed. There are a lot of mixed messages.
- Carrying a mobile phone puts you more in danger of getting robbed.
ü
Almost and even
number of people either agreed or partially agreed to this. People who agreed
are mostly parents whose main concern is the safety of their loved ones.
ü
People who partially
disagreed (17%) and disagreed (4%) are mainly from 19-22 and 23-27 age group.
ü
Females mostly chose
to stay neutral.
- People are getting harassed easily due to Instant Messaging and “Missed call”.
ü
There is
only a mere 4% who disagreed, so it seems it is a big issue.
ü
Instant
messaging or ‘missed call’ do get annoying in class rooms or quiet places. The
ratio of male female is equal in the number of people that agreed and partially
agreed.
We
have also prepared the following table that shows the total number of male and
female participants.

2.3 Case Studies
Case Study #1
Name: Md. Shiefuzzaman
Age: 23
Profession: Student
Background:
Mr.
Shiefuzzaman is doing his B.Sc. in Computer Science at American International University – Bangladesh. He is living in a hostel and his home
district is Khulna. As he is not live with his parents, he has
been using his mobile phone from the beginning of his university life. Now he
is using two Sims, one is Grameen Phone and the
other one is Teletalk. He chose these two companies because of their facility
for their users and tariff rate.
Views on “Positive and negative aspects of Mobile Phone”:
Mr.
Shiefuzzaman considers that mobile phones can be used in either negatively or
positively. The reason why he considers mobile phones as a positive way because
he thinks that only by using his mobile phone, he can communicate with his family
members at any time. As he is a student, any information regarding to education,
he comes to know very quickly because of using his mobile phone. Sometimes, if
there is any new class schedule declared, then his friends inform him through
mobile phone. Again, in case of a quiz or an exam, he can make sure the timing
of the exam by calling his friends. In addition, sometimes he needs to use the
internet because a faculty may have
given him an assignment in the internet, and he has to submit the assignment
online. By using WAP he can connect to the internet through a mobile phone and
can do his necessary works. He is also very fond of music, so he listens to
songs using his mobile phone. And with the help of camera he can take pictures
of his memorable moments.
On
the other hand, the reason why he considers mobile phones in a negative way is
because sometimes some people spend lots of money for on it as they didn’t plan
to and sometimes it takes away their valuable time. He also said that sometimes
mobile phones ring during class time, which is very annoying and disturbing for
others; it can break their concentration on the class or lecture. He also considers
that mobile phones can put one in danger. He also told that the features of
taking picture at any moment can loose someone’s privacy especially for the females. He then told us
that one of his friends took some of his classmates’ (Female) picture without
telling her and showed those pictures to his friends.
He strongly believes
that the correct use of mobile phones will not create any bad affect.
Case Study #2
Name: Nurul Afser
Talukder
Age: 28
Profession: Job
Background:
Mr.
Talukder is in a managerial position in a multi-national buying company located
at Gulshan-2. He is a married person. He has been using his mobile phone for 6
years. He is living in Ajimpur but he has to go to Gulshan every morning for
his office. He is using only one SIM which is Grameen Phone postpaid service.
Mr.
Talukder considers that mobile phones have more good effects than bad ones.
Mobile phones have become a part of his life as he told us. He uses his mobile
phone as an alarm clock. Every day he wakes up from bed by his mobile phone
with the feature of alarm. Then he again uses his mobile phone to check on his
daily tasks. He keeps all his meeting and daily
tasks on his mobile phone. He then makes his whole day schedule according to
his tasks. Using his mobile phone he contacts with all his colleges at any time
as he requires. To pass his time in office he likes to contact his newly
married wife each hour. So mobile phones help him largely. Sometimes when he is
outside of his town, or sometimes when he has to go out of the country and need
to keep contact with his boss regularly, he connects his laptop with his mobile
and using WAP facility he can connect to internet and can
contact his Boss and tell him the current progress. By using MMS he can
also share some very memorable moments with his family members.
On
the other hand, he feels very disturbing when mobile phone rings in a meeting.
Most of the time he switches off his phone but sometimes he forgets to turn it
off. Another thing that he mentioned to us is that since he is using a
post-paid line, sometimes operators cut his connection without giving him a
message or noticed. Then he has to pay some extra money to the bank to
reconnect the service.
Case Study #3
Name: Faria Enam
Age: 42
Profession:
House-wife.
Background:
Mrs.
Faria Enam is a house wife with two children. Her first child studies at City College in 2nd year and her second child
studies in class 9 at Ideal School & College. Her house is located at
Mohammadpur. She gave her two children two mobile phones so that she can
communicate with them at any time. Generally she passes most of her time in her
home.
Views on “Positive and negative aspects of Mobile
Phone”:
Mrs.
Faria Enam considers that mobile phones have lots of advantages as well as some
disadvantages. She said that by only using mobile phone she can contact her
beloved children whenever she is very much worried about them. For example, she
said, when her children go for private tutoring and they are not back on time, she
can call them and find out the situation of the traffic or how far they are.
Again, when she needs to call other guardians to inquire about school exams or
syllabus she uses her mobile phone. She can also communicate with her relative
outside Dhaka.
She
also gave us some reason why mobile phones are bad for young generations.
Sometimes she notices that her children are spending too much time talking to
their friends. It also worries her sometime that she will receive unexpected
amount of bill due to over usage. That’s why she has to take some extra care
and consideration for using her mobile phone. During exam times, she doesn’t
let her children use the mobile phone.
At
last, she mentioned that given the present situation of our country, we
couldn’t afford to not give our children a mobile phone mainly for their
safety. But we have to be careful about its usage, she added.
3.0 Conclusion
Mobile phones are a very popular communication
media in Bangladesh. The users of this device are
increasing day by day. But as we can see the positive or negative side of this
technology depends on the users. In this report, we have
presented the findings and analyses of our research on “Positive
and negative aspects of Mobile Phone” in Bangladesh. If a similar research is carried out
in another country, the findings might be different than ours. The current
states of mobile industry of a country, the different tariffs of different package of mobile connection, its
services and coverage area, the use of mobiles by different ages and category
of subscribers, all these factors
have a huge impact on the aspects
of mobile phones in any company. And the findings of our survey clearly reflect this fact.
The opinions of the people who took part in the survey were more or less consistent. The case study
interviews also presented us with similar opinions. In analyzing the findings
of the survey we have mentioned in details the probable reason that worked in
favor is people’s views. We tried to make the findings of the survey more
easily understandable by preparing bar charts for each of them. All in all, we
tried our best to utilize our full strength and resource to make the report as
complete as possible in short time. We believe this report can be considered as
a dependable paper in any kind of future work regarding Positive
and negative aspects of Mobile Phones.
4.0 Recommendations
As
we mentioned before, currently we have the largest numbers of mobile phone
users in Bangladesh. It has created a huge impact on our economy
and how we live our day-to-day lives. Though this positive side of this
technology seem to
be endless, there are considerable amount of negative effects that can be
easily avoidable.
First,
and foremost, we need to educate people more about this new technology and its
proper usage. Undeniably, mobile phones have created a huge impact for farmers,
fishermen and villagers. Farmers and fishermen now can hear about the current
situation of the market long before they bring their product for sell. This
information can help them make some crucial decisions. Government and
mobile phone companies should subsidize and make mobile phone service available
at a very low cost to farmers, fishermen and villagers so they can improve
their lives and in turn improve the overall situation of Bangladesh.
As
we found from our survey, students and young generation tend to spend more time on
mobiles phones than others. Mobile phones are a great resource especially for
students. Students should
use to in a way that serves their educational purposes. Students can
communicate quickly and easily with their fellow students and discuss
educational problems. Parents should be concern about how their children are
using mobile phones. They also need to set the spending limit for their mobile
phones.
Businessmen
can easily do some work related activities through their PDAs. This way they
will have more time to stay at home and be with their family.
Certain
features of mobile phones are indeed of a great concern. To avoid our privacy being
violated, we should impose ban on mobile phones with cameras to certain places.
We should campaign and get the message out to more people about not using
mobile phones while driving.
We
believe that if it is possible to follow the things we have discussed above, it
will not be at all impossible for us to gain nothing but the benefit from this
technology. Many other parts of the world bare the proof
of it, and we can do it too.

Glossary
A
Airtime - Actual time spent talking on the cellular
telephone. Most carriers bill customers based on how many minutes of airtime
they use each month.
B
Bandwidth
- The amount of frequency
allocated for an RF transmission. For example, a cellular channel typically has
a bandwidth of 30 KHz, I.E. a cellular system requires 30 KHz of frequency per
channel to transmit it's signal.
C
Carrier - The operating frequency of a wireless
system. A fixed frequency radio signal which is shifted up and down (modulated)
in either frequency (FM) or level (AM) by the audio signal.
G
GSM - Global System for Mobiles. The most mature
digital wireless standard is GSM, usually referred to as the 'European' digital
standard. GSM is a TDMA standard, with 8 users per channel. The speech is taken
in 20 ms windows, which are sampled (13-bit resolution at 8 ksps), processed
and compressed. The vocoder rate of 13 kbits/s is used. A channel is 200 KHz
wide, and contains data from eight users. Each user has a time slot of 0.577
mS, during which a burst of 156 bits is transmitted at a modulation frequency
of approximately 270 KHz. GSM is transmitted on a 900 MHz carrier.
I
IM - Instant messaging is a form of real-time communication between two or more
people based on typed text.
M
MMS - Multimedia
Messaging Service is a standard for a telephony messaging systems that
allow sending messages that includes multimedia objects (images, audio, video,
rich text) and not just text messages as in Short message service (SMS). It is
mainly deployed in cellular networks along with other messaging systems like
SMS, Mobile Instant Messaging and Mobile E-Mail.
MP3
Player - A digital audio player
is a device that stores, organizes and plays digital music files. It is more
commonly referred to as an MP3 player
(because of that format's ubiquity), but they also play many additional file
formats.
“Missed
Call” – When a person calls someone and intentionally hangs up the phone after one
ring just to alert the receiver of something.
P
PDA - Personal digital assistants are handheld devices that were originally
designed as personal organizers, but became much more versatile over the years.
PDAs have many uses: calculating, use as a clock and calendar, playing computer
games, accessing the Internet, sending and receiving e-mail, use as a radio or
stereo, video recording, recording notes, use as an address book, GPS and use
as a spreadsheet. Newer PDAs also have both color screens and audio
capabilities, enabling them to be used as mobile phones (smartphone), web
browsers or portable media players. Many PDAs can access the Internet,
intranets or extranets via Wi-Fi, or Wireless Wide-Area Networks (WWANs). One
of the most significant PDA characteristic is the presence of a touch screen.
S
SIM
- Subscriber Identification
Module. A credit card size card which is owned by a subscriber, who slides it
into any GSM handset to transform it into 'their' phone. It will ring when
their unique phone number is dialed; calls made will be billed to their account;
all options and services connected; voicemail can be collected and so on.
T
Talk
time - The length of time you
can talk on your portable or transportable cellular phone without recharging
the battery. The battery capacity of a cellular portable or transportable is
usually expressed in terms of so many minutes of talk time OR so many hours of
standby time. When you're talking, the phone draws more power from the battery.
W
WAP - Wireless Application Protocol is an
open international standard for applications that use wireless communication.
Its principal application is to enable access to the Internet from a mobile
phone or PDA.
