Pop-singer Azam Khan dead

Today our Pop-singer Azam Khan died 5 june, 2011 sunday at Dhaka CMH hospital at the age of 62. He was suffering from oral cancer which had spread to his lungs.. yesterday he was shifted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka Cantonment from Square Hospital.

"His family took him away around 10:25pm," Square Hospital cancer specialist Dr Qamruzzaman Chowdhury, who supervised Khan's treatment, told bdnews24.com on Wednesday.

Earlier, his family decided to shift the Bangla pop legend after a meeting with the medical board overseeing the treatment of the freedom fighter, now fighting against cancer.

Cultural personalities including singer Fakir Alamgir and television presenter Hanif Sanket were also present at the meeting.

Dr Chowdhury said, "There is nothing to do at this stage in any part of the world."

"He is in such a stage where we can only assist his respiration by artificial ventilation. Any hospital with such facility can do that," he added.

On Tuesday, he told bdnews24.com that there was little chance for ailing pop maestro to 'come back'.

Khan's daughter Ema Khan earlier told bdnews24.com that they had requested President Zillur Rahman to shift her father to CMH.

The president, who visited Azam Khan in the morning, responded immediately and asked his military secretary to make arrangements 'if the family members want'.

The 61-year-old pop singer was admitted to the hospital on May 22 when his pain became unbearable after the oral cancer spread to different parts of his body.

He was diagnosed with the cancer in 2010 and underwent advanced treatment in Singapore twice that year. But he did not follow up on his treatment.

Dr Qamruzzaman said his cancer had spread to the lungs, liver and bones.

But doctors could not start his cancer treatment (chemotherapy) as they had to put him on life support system.

They tried taking him off the life support on Tuesday as he regained a little bit of consciousness, but could not as the cancerous tumours had spread aggressively involving over 75 percent of the lungs.
